You use different languages and different platforms. Your team has different proficiencies and often live on different continents. You need development tools that can keep up with all of it, letting people collaborate productively from anywhere at any time.
Your Code and Your Team,
Wherever You Are.
The Modern Development Team is Out There.

Introducing RestlessIDE.
RestlessIDE combines a world-class editing environment based on Microsoft’s popular VS Code editor with a host of other services that let your team do all of their work from within a web browser. This includes everything from development databases with web-based GUIs to full web-accessible remote desktops with Podman access.

Rock-solid Workspaces.
The core of RestlessIDE is the editor workspace. Each workspace is a separate Ubuntu-based container running in the cloud that can be pre-configured with the languages and local databases you need. You can specify a git repository to have it cloned automatically, and you can further customize your container however you need to get your project running. When you’re ready to run your project, you can set it to listen at port 3000 or 3030 and then access it right from a different tab.

Powerful Collaboration Tools
RestlessIDE has a growing list of add-on services available to help your team collaborate better. These include the team chat application Zulip (with features very similar to Slack or Teams, including a mobile client) and OpenProject, a multi-disciplinary project management suite, with more on the way.

Dev Databases For Everyone
RestlessIDE makes it easy to spin up dev databases for your whole team. These include relational databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL, document databases like MongoDB, and caches like Redis and Memcache. Each of these listen on a port that can be accessed from all of your developers’ workspaces, making it simple to all see the same data. What’s more is that each database comes with a web-based GUI to allow for easy editing and administration.

Private Remote Desktops
Sometimes you just need a desktop. Maybe you need to fix an image quickly in Gimp, or sftp a file to a server in Filezilla, or build an image in Podman. RestlessIDE gives you private remote desktops that run in the cloud and can be accessed from any modern web browser, so you can jump in and do whatever you need even if you don’t have your office computer handy.

10 Reasons Why Browser-based Development is the Bee’s Knees
- You can leave your laptop at the office. Since your code lives in the cloud, you can pick up right where you left off when you get home.
- Productivity on the cheap. Suddenly a $200 Chromebook can be just as productive as a $2,500 Macbook. How much can your team save?
- Easy demo sites. You can demo your app for your client directly from your workspace. Focus on features and not on deployment pipelines.
- Onboard new devs in minutes, not days. When bringing someone new on the team, you can spin up a new workspace and assign it to them. That’s it.
- Get unstuck. When your teammate needs a little help to get past a tricky problem, you can jump into their workspace, diagnose the problem, and get it fixed quickly without even leaving your desk.
- Avoid library/language version problems. Have you ever needed to jump back into a project months or even years later, only to find that it relied on an ancient library or interpreter that you don’t have installed anymore or that would be a pain get working again? Not a problem. If you originally developed in RestlessIDE, you can just jump back into your workspace whenever you need to and everything is just as you left it.
- Crash recovery in seconds. Since your workspaces run in the cloud, they operate independently from your local machine. If you need to reboot go right ahead. Pop open your browser and you’re right back to work.
- Flexibility without obligations. What if you need to work offline sometimes, or if you just enjoy using a different local IDE on occasion? That’s great! When you’re ready to get back to RestlessIDE, just commit your local code, push it up, and pull it down into your workspace when you’re ready to go back on the cloud. RestlessIDE dev databases can be accessed from anywhere, so once you have your .env files set up you can go back and forth between local and cloud without missing a beat.
- Hardware upgrades without the downtime. We’ve all done the new computer dance. The endless environment setup tasks. Software installs. Digging around emails for license keys. With RestlessIDE, you can just open the website and be back to work right away.
- The web is really fast. There used to be a time when working within a browser involved a ton of tradeoffs. That’s no longer the case. Modern browsers have become so optimized that they can run desktop-class applications like VS Code without breaking a sweat. And with modern container technology, you can even take advantage of hardware like GPUs from within your web apps. You’ve come a long way, baby.

Frequently Asked Questions
I really enjoy using AI when coding. Does RestlessIDE support AI plugins?
Yes, it does! The editor in RestlessIDE comes from the OpenVSCode-Server project, giving you access to the thousands of plugins available in the OpenVSX Registry. This includes many AI plugins like Kilo Code and Claude Code, which connect to external APIs.
My work requires access to a GPU; can I still use RestlessIDE?
You certainly can. Your RestlessIDE account lets you attach new hosts to your account, including several with Nvidia GPUs. We’ve engineered our workspaces to be be able to take advantage of these when they are available.
I'm the kind of person who likes to work on a bunch of projects at the same time. Does RestlessIDE limit the number of workspaces I can have open at once?
Not at all. The standard RestlessIDE subscription gives you 3 workspaces on our shared hosts, and you can access any of these whenever you want. They do shut themselves down after 30 minutes of inactivity, but you can set one of them as a KeepAlive workspace which will never shut down. If you’d like more workspaces or more KeepAlive workspaces, you can rent an additional host and then fill it up however you would like.
There are a million web-based development environments out there. Why should I choose RestlessIDE?
So glad you asked! RestlessIDE is attempting to go further than other web-based editors; we see the editor as just one component of the overall coding experience, and are trying to create a world where a developer can do everything in the cloud. What’s the point of editing your code in a browser if you need to jump back to a full desktop to build Docker images, or access a database client, or FTP some files? We want all of these things to live under one simple, affordable system. See our Why RestlessIDE? page for more details.
