Let’s Talk Features.

It Starts Good and Gets Better.

RestlessIDE is a platform for building out your development infrastructure. Every account gets access to Workspaces, self-contained editor environments with full terminal access where you can work on your code via a VS Code IDE. If you decide to dive deeper into the platform, you can add Hosts to your account. Hosts are virtual machines with various CPU, memory, disk, and GPU configurations. Once you add Hosts, you can fill them up with additional Workspaces, dev databases, collaboration tools, and other services.

Let’s explore what all is available.

Workspaces

The editor used in RestlessIDE comes from Gitpod’s OpenVSCode-Server project, which embeds Microsoft’s VS Code into a container using a minimalist shim. What you get is a very familiar, very responsive UI that lets you get to work immediately.

Each Workspace has a full Linux (Ubuntu) terminal. This means that if you need to install anything it’s usually just an apt install away.  The workspace can also be configured to have external ports (3000 and/or 3030) open, so you can easily see your running code or access your application from other workspaces.

Your Workspaces can be preconfigured with a wide variety of languages to help you get up and running quickly. Or you could go your own way and start with the basic NodeJS Workspace and install all of your own languages and libraries. We also support preinstalling a local database, with options for MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB.

RestlessIDE has a full complement of plugins available via the OpenVSX registry. This includes plenty of AI plugins to help you code more efficiently with autocomplete, agents, and more.

Each organization in RestlessIDE can have a number of groups defined with admins and members. Team admins can access team members’ Workspaces to help configure them, assist in debugging, or even just review their code. We make collaboration easy.

Your RestlessIDE Workspace can track your usage to make filling out timesheets really easy. No more guesswork at the end of the month!

Collaboration Tools

Zulip team chat is an open-source package with features similar to Slack or Microsoft Teams, but which can run on your own hardware. RestlessIDE has an easy install option to let you place Zulip on your host machine, and our LDAP server lets all of your users log right in with their same username and password. Mobile clients are also available!

OpenProject is a multi-philosophy project management suite with features similar to Jira. You can create and track tasks, assign them to your team members, generate progress reports, and even create wiki articles to centralize your documentation. Your users can login with their RestlessIDE credentials.

RestlessIDE lets you set up your teams using the Groups feature, and Group administrators can access Group members’ workspaces to help them through problems, review their code, or just see what they’re working on.

* Zulip and OpenProject require that your account has a private host. Prices start at $15/mo.

Dev Databases

RestlessIDE lets organizations create development database containers that can be shared among all of the developers on their team. These can be accessed both from Workspaces or from developers’ own environments, and are available at no extra charge beyond the monthly charge for the Host on which they reside.

PostgreSQL is a feature-packed open source relational database with a focus on extensibility and SQL compliance. It’s very popular among developers looking to move from traditional closed-source databases like Oracle as it has a similar stored procedure language called PL/pgSQL. Our database image includes the PGAdmin 4 web UI, through which you can manage other remote databases as well.

MySQL is a popular open source database known for its speed and usage in popular platforms like WordPress. Our image includes the administration application PHPMyAdmin.

MongoDB is a popular document-oriented, NoSQL database, commonly used in applications where massive scalability is required. Our images include the Mongo Express web administration application.

Memcache is a popular key-value cache first created at LiveJournal to speed up the processing of web requests. Our images include the PHPCacheAdmin application to help administer your server and view cached entries.

Redis is a popular distributed cache and message broker, and one of the most popular NoSQL databases. RestlessIDE images include the Redis Commander web administration application.

* Dev databases require that your account has a private host. Prices start at $15/mo.

Remote Desktops

RestlessIDE supports a variety of Ubuntu-based remote desktops, which can be configured with your choice of window manager. We currently support KDE, IceWM, Mate and XFCE. Thank you to LinuxServer.io for the images!

Our remote desktops let you run full desktop apps, which will let you finally perform tasks for which web-based alternatives aren’t readily available. For example, the Gnome Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is a full-featured image editor not unlike Adobe Photoshop. Filezilla is an SFTP program that lets you securely upload files to servers just like your ancestors.

Providing modern container tooling from within a container is a challenge in the past due to the complexity of the container’s sandbox. We were able to work around this through implementing rootless Podman, which presents a (mostly) Docker-compatible interface within your remote desktop.

What Linux desktop would be complete without Aisleriot? Our desktops allow you to install a variety of fun games from the Ubuntu repositories. It’s probably not ideal for Triple A games, but they can certainly kill time while waiting for a build to complete.

* Remote desktops require that your account has a private host. Prices start at $15/mo.
